What is the surface wind measured in?
Direction in degrees True
Speed in knots
When would you report a variation, regarding wind direction?
60 degrees of more but less than 180 degrees
When would you pass a Gust ?
If the max wind speed in 10 or more knots faster than the mean (in a 10 minute average)
If the visibility is less than 800metres how is it measured?
Increments of 50 metres
If the visibility is 800metres or more but less than 5km, how is it measured?
Increments of 100 metres
When the visibility is 5km or more, how is it measured?
In 1km steps
How should you report cloud on a METAR?
1- the lowest individual layer
2- the next highest of at least 3 oktas ( SCT, BKN or OVC)
3- the next highest of at least 5 oktas (BKN, OVC)
What does the term CAVOK mean?
1- visibility is 10km or more
2- No significant weather at or in the vicinity of the aerodrome
3- no cloud below a level 5000ft above aerodrome elevation or minimum sector altitude
Is the QFE/QNH rounded up or down?
Down
When would a SIGMET be issued?
If the weather phenomena is reported below-
Thunderstorm Heavy hail Freezing rain Severe icing Severe turbulence Tropical cyclone Severe mountain waves Heavy dust or sand storm Volcanic ash cloud
How long is a SIGMET valid for?
No usually valid for more than 4 hours
Expect volcanic ash cloud where the period can be up to 12 hours
What weather phenomena would be on an Aerodrome Weather Warning ?
Gales Squalls Snow Frost Thunderstorm Freezing precipitation Fog
