Interpretation: this is the beginning of the turning gestures seen throughout this section, showing us her personality

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: (development of size) she does 1 and a half turns with her arms in a relaxed parallel above her head, letting her torso and head relax and move with her. She ends in a side lunge facing upstage with her arms in third, then immediately turns to face downstage, with her leg high in second, and arms in a wide v

On lyric: “no one knows”

Interpretation: she has opened out more and is beginning to enjoy and embrace life

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: she does an inwards round kick, sweeping the arms out and over in a vertical plane to cross the body, then does an outwards round kick on the opposite leg, sweeping the arm open at the same time. She does a small vertical circle of the leg behind her with her knees together.

Interpretation: Her skirt creates circles in the air as she moves her legs, looking like a trail that she is leaving behind in her life

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: She runs towards upstage to the 4 males who are stood in a square formation and jumps into their arms landing on her stomach in a pencil like position. They throw her up in the in the air and she does one full revolution, then she is thrown back up again landing sat up, with her legs split straight in front of her, then carry her to downstage left.

On lyrics: “Goodbye Ruby Tuesday” (volume increases)

Interpretation: This is the first time she is raised high above the males and so is a celebration of her in this moment

A

Movement: 3 of the males lift her, 2 holding her arms and one on her leg. She is in a horizontal position and circles the gesture leg in an outwards round kick in the air, then is lowered into an arabesque

Interpretation: Further celebration of her, lifted high and is almost paraded around the stage

Interpretation: she has no worries, she is carefree and is enjoying her life. she remains having the control over the males and being the focus of this section of the dance

Movement: She does a step ball change towards downstage right then does a grande jete, being thrown in the air from one male to another male, then lands in an arabesque

A

Lyric: “she just can’t be chained”
Movement: Facing stage left she takes 3 walks forwards on the Demi pointe, lifting her knees through a parallel retire, her arms are lifted straight above her head and change from right, left, right, getting higher each time

Interpretation: She looks like she is climbing a ladder, wanting to get out into the world and experience new things, and scale new heights

Movement: she gets into a ballroom hold with one of the male dancers and spins rapidly towards downstage left

Interpretation: social dance not yet seen, she is experiencing something new and different in her life

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: She runs kicking her heels up, spinning in circles with her arms in second and head back, moving from upstage left to centre stage in front of the males. She then does fast chaine turns with her head still lifted back. She ends the turns with her legs in second facing the males, and her head carries on the circle, with a free flowing dynamic

On lyric: “still I’m going to miss you”

Interpretation: she feels free and is playing, enjoying the dizzy sensation. use of classic vocal

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: Taking a direct pathway to downstage right, she does 2 travelling balonces, one with the arms in third, and the other windmilling her arms out to the side, she then does a step and two hops, with one leg in attitude devan, and her arms in a contracted fifth above her head. She then does a turn into a small leap, curving both arms back over her head, lifting her head back

On lyric: “she comes and goes”

Interpretation: shows her as mercurial and unpredictable as constant change of movement and very fast and free

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: she does a little run to downstage left and bends down into a crouch position, she picks up an imaginary rose in her hand, and looks out to the audience. She then turns to face stage right and does an arabesque looking up at her lifted hand

On lyric: “don’t question why she needs to be so free”

Interpretation: she is living care free and is simply admiring a flower, appears self possessed

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: The very opening of this section she walks forwards to upstage centre, then turns to walk towards downstage. Her head if lifted up initially, but as she walks facing DS she clasps her hands behind her back and drops her head so her focus is down

On lyric: “she would never say where she came from”

Interpretation: She looks as though she is lost in deep thought and instantly appears mysterious and like she’s an enigma

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: she lifts one leg up in front of her in a straight extension, then bends it in through passe behind her, contracting her stomach. She then lifts her front leg up in front again, this time lifting the front arm as well, then retracts them both back in towards the body, turning her head over her shoulder. Then steps to the side crossing the leg over the body, and hugs herself, then both sweep out to second and her arms curve behind her back, and her foot draws a circle then extends outwards, and she contracts over facing stage right

On lyrics: “Yesterday don’t matter if its gone”

Interpretation: blend of ballet through extended legs and turned out feet, with Graham’s fluidity, use of torso and off balance

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: she steps into a small fourth position as a prep, her arms in third, and she turns opening the leg out partway through the turn, then brings it into passe, lifting one arm up leaning and falling out of it.

On lyric: “still I’m going to miss you”

Interpretation: blend of ballet through pirouette and graham with off balance and more contemporary turn

Give the interpretation

A

Movement: The female is stood in a low backwards attitude on one leg, and is holding hands with one of the male dancers, positioned in downstage right corner. She keeps her foot still but leans all the way back, and the male runs around her in a circle

Interpretation: shows classical partnering, with male supporting and moving the female dancer. Is very childlike as is fun and fast ad further development of circling gestures
