Movement: male and female quickly get into a ballroom hold and spin very rapidly towards downstage left. She is released from hold and does an extra spin under his arm opening out to end side-by-side facing downstage holding hands. They then take three quick walks forwards on the balls of the feet swivel on the heels forwards.
-on lyric ‘for you to know’
Interpretation: social dance was a way of courting through close hold, The speed of the terms shows people in the 60s living for the moment taking every day as it came and feeling fast and free. They end in a jive position and perform what looks like the twist
- Describe a movement example where social dance is seen in this section
Give the interpretation
Movement: in unison the male and female both do a step ball change towards downstage right wrapping their arms around their waist. Then do a turn whipping 1 arm around their head then pull back leaving the heel placed out in front of them, scooping their arm up.
Interpretation: fast footwork is a feature of social dance particularly the jive and Lindy hop. Can also see twisting of the hip and emphasised placement of the heel
- Describe a movement example which shows the male and females relationship
Give the interpretation
Movement: they repeat the step ball changes travelling towards upstage left, with the female moving backwards and her arms out, and male moving forwards with his hands on his lapels, circling his arms. She leans forwards towards him slightly moving her hips and shoulders in a subsiding way. Motif development as a change of tempo to 1 and 2, 3 and 4 on lyrics ‘well love is love and not fade away’
Interpretation: female is engaged and just as interested in the relationship as he is. Change in tempo used to highlight she’s the one luring him into her
- Describe a movement example which shows the male and females relationship
Give the interpretation
Movement: whilst stood in a back to back position the male is flinging his arms around from side to side, and female does a tiny isolation moving her bum backwards, causing him to fall dramatically onto the floor
Interpretation: shows that the female has the upper hand and power and control over him in the relationship as she is the one who has manipulated him onto a lower level
- Describe a movement example which shows the male and females relationship
Give the interpretation
Movement: The male and female step onto the heel and scoop their arms up as they come in towards each other then cross over then rock backwards leaving the heel upwards
Interpretation: motif development of inversion/ mirroring shows harmony of relationship and they’re of equal status, and both like each other
- Describe how the movement material of the male and female dancer contrast
Give the interpretation
Male= fast, erratic changing of levels, with each time he falls to the floor he immediately stands back up to carry on showing off to her
Movement: As male is released from the ballroom hold, he slides down into a jazz split. He then very quickly springs back up onto his feet transferring his weight over his arm.
Female: movements are more reserved, controlled and purposeful, always remaining on a higher level
Movement: male and female are stood back to back, and he is going his arms from side to side. She performs the tiniest isolation of moving her bum backwards causing him to dramatically fall to the floor. She remains still looking back at him as he attempts to get back up onto his feet
- Describe another way how the movement material of the male and female dancer contrast
Give the interpretation
Male: Multiple times he’s seen getting carried away in his own little world, showing sense of own self worth and importance. Also very emotional, trying to attention seek
Movement: The male dancer is moving side to side dancing in his own little world and the female pushes her hip towards him, causing him to turn around towards her with his hands out in front of him, then fall dramatically to the floor to the rhythm of the music
Female: Shows her admiration for him in a more subtle and concise way
Movement: in a ballroom hold the female dancer circles her hip then spins out of hold and clasps her hands down in front of her. She does two walks forwards folding her leg out to place it on the heel, ending hinged over fixated on the male
- Describe a movement where a music dance relationship can be seen
Give the interpretation
Movement: Direct correlation is used when the male and female are in the downstage left corner and they are side-by-side holding hands in the middle with the other arm stretched out to the side. They take three spring toes moving backwards and inwards towards each other, looking at each other on the three words of the lyrics “how I feel“
Interpretation: shows their harmony and relationship as in sync with each other and the music
- Describe another movement where a music dance relationship can be seen
Give the interpretation
Movement: male dancer circles his arms over his shoulder to propel him onto the floor, he then flips into a supines position with his weight on his shoulders and the ball of the foot of one leg with the other leg raised up to the ceiling straight. He switches his legs 4 times on the exact rhythm of the music (1, 2, &4) showing direct correlation
Interpretation: this is also a highlight as is an unusual dance move, is quite comedic, exciting and engaging to watch as he’s trying to get the female’s attention. Also shows fun and freeing lifestyle people adopted in the 60s
- Describe a movement where the theme battle of the sexes is shown
Give the interpretation
Movement: male falls dramatically onto the floor in the downstage left corner and hits his fists several times on the floor to the rhythm of the music whilst lay in a prone position. The female is Stead facing stage left with her arms folded and looking smug to the audience. She then drops her foot into his back causing him to turn over. She does a quick pivot turn and pulled him up off the floor
Interpretation: Female is the one who knocked him down and helped him back up showing her control over the movement and her upper hand over him
- Describe a movement where the theme battle of the sexes is shown
Give the interpretation
Movement: male stands up in front of female and are both facing stage right. She grabs a hold of his upper arms and together they walk forwards on the balls of their feet, swivelling their heels forwards, slightly leaning back
Interpretation: female is holding down his wings, and is restricting his movement and from being free and able to fly and hook up with other women showing her control
