Production
Materials & resources obtained from natural environment & altered to become consumables

the way production is carried out
Kin ordered MOP
Non-industrial societies → kin ordered mod of production
• More intimate relationship between worker & means of production (compared with Industrial modes of production)
• Labor not bought but given as a social obligation
• Mutual aid in production as expression of larger web of social relations
Capitalist MOP
- recent system in human history
- industrialized mass production ( and therefore mass consumption – labor saving technology
- free market = form of exchange
- Key idea: if you leave market alone it will generate greatest quantity of goods for society = invisible hand
- Key idea: individuals act economically based on rational self-interest (putting other’s needs first might interfere with one’s happiness)
- Self interest vs. common good
Redistribution
Goods flow to a central point & then are redistributed among members- especially important in horticultural societies
Reciprocity (General)
assume exchange will balance out Ex: hunter share kill w/ group Ex: parents and kids
Reciprocity (Balanced)
gift repaid in a set time & goods are equal in value
Reciprocity (Negative)
when someone tries to get something for nothing
Cash Crops
things people grow to sell
