Cultural Relativism
cultural traits best understood when viewed w/ in a cultural context of which they are a part. No culture is superior or “right”. There is no “cultural yardstick” by which to measure/ compare.
Norms
- Shared ideas about the way things should be done.
* Rules about behavior
Values
Sets of ideas about what is true, right and beautiful
National Culture
- Language
- History
- Religion
- Ancestry
- Territory
Subcultures
Subgroups within a national culture shares some features with the larger group, but differ in ways
Dominant Culture
- More able to impose values & norms on subcultures
- Controls greater wealth and power
- Institutions key to this power
