Section 59 - Infection Control Flashcards
What is a nosocomial infection?
Any infection contracted in a healthcare setting
The chain of infection requires a continuous links among what three elements?
Agent——————————>Mode of transmission——————————>susceptible host
\ / \ /
Portal of exit Portal of entry
What are agents?
Are infectious microorganisms classified into four groups: -viruses
-bacteria
-fungus
-parasites
What is the mode of transmission?
How microorganisms travel from the reservoir to the susceptible host
What is an example of contact transmission?
Skin to skin contact
What is an example of droplet transmission?
Sneezing, coughing
What is an example of vector-borne transmission?
Insect, malaria, Lyme disease (ticks), or dengue virus (mosquitos)
What is an example of parenteral transmission?
Needle stick, open wound, HANGNAIL, eyes
What is a susceptible host?
A person who is NOT RESISTANT OR IMMUNE that can become infected due to a breakdown in the prevention systems
What is the easiest, most effective way to break the chain of transmission?
Washing your hands
Medical asepsis is defined as what?
As the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms after they leave the body, wash hands, clean equipment, disinfection procedures
