Section 5 - Sustainable Sites (SS) Flashcards
Sustainable Sites Intent?
1- analyze relationship between site and proposed facility. ( Site Analysis)
2- restore project site natural elements.
3- preserve biodiversity.
4- integrate the site with local and regional ecosystem.
Concepts and strategies for Sustainable Sites;
1- Design and Construction
2- Operation and Maintenance
3- Heat Island effect
4- Rainwater management
5- Light Pollution Reduction
1.Design and construction Concepts;
A-Site Assessments
B- Site Design;
C- Landscaping;
D- Maximize Open Space;
E- Minimize Construction Activity Pollution ;
1: Construction General Permit (CGP);
2: Erosion and Sedimentation
3-Stabilization
4-Pollution Perversion
F- Restore and Conserve Sensitive Areas;
G- BrownField Development;
H- Env. Site Assessment;
2- Operations and Maintenance;
A- BLDG Exterior Management Plan. (Energy/Water Efficiency, Outdoor Air Quality, Improved Env.)
B- Snow and Ice Removal
C-Integrated Pest Management ( IPM Strategies cuz normal Chemicals cause Toxins )
3- Heat Island Effect;
Definition; the thermal absorption of heat that causes high temp. Temp diff up to 10 degrees.
A-Optimizing Building Foot Print.
B-Green Roofs; better than high SRI Materials, low Storm Water, Habitable, Insulation, LEED Credits - Open Space.
C-Underground /shaded Parking.
D-Shading Plants/Devices.
-SRI ;
Solar Reflective index.
(determine the effects of the light reflectance).
-SR;
Solar Reflectance; the ability of a material to reflect solar rays back into atmosphere
( Range 0.0–1.0)
0 means all energy is absorbed
1 means all energy is reflected.
- Emittance ;
how a surface releases heat.
(Range 0.0 - 1.0 )
- Heat island effect is reduced when SRI/SR is
high enough / For Roof the best way to measure it’s ability to reject heat is SRI Value.
SR is More appropriate for materials that have thermal mass.
4- Rain Water Management;
A- reduce Water Runoff.
B- Low Impact Development (LID).
C- Bio Retention Cell.
D- Vegetated Swale.
E- Permeable Pavement. 50% Open
to be considered Pervious.
F-Reusing Rain Water.
5- Light Pollution Reduction;
Problem;
A- Glare
B- Light Trespass
C- Sky Glow
Fix;
A-shading
B- Light Shelves
C- Right Light Fixtures
D-Light Power Density.
E- Lighting Design and Control.
