Q

Glycolysis

A
  • occurs in presence or absence of oxygen
  • 1 glucose -> 2 pyruvate (universal intermediate)
  • net gain of 2 ATP and 2 NADH

Q

TCA cycle // Kreb’s cycle

A
  • repeated twice
  • pyruvic acid completely oxidized to water and CO2
  • net gain: 2 ATP, 6 NADH, 2 FADH2 (NADH and FADH2 enter ETC)

Q

Electron Transport Chain (ETC)

A
  • Final acceptor is OXYGEN
  • ATP synthesized as a result of proton motor force by passing electrons along the chain (chemiosmotic theory)
  • use reducing power of NADH and FADH2 to create ATP = oxidative phosphorylation

Q

Fermentation

A

absence of O2 - e- are transferred to organic terminal e- acceptor. Used by organisms that can’t respire
- pyruvate to lactic acid (yogurt)
