Deception def.
intentional act that senders knowingly transmit msgs to foster false belief by receiver.
Deception leads to…highly likely that..
- major relational transgression, leads to feelings of betrayal
- you or someone will engage in; 2/3 were lies
During a single interaction…
However, interact more w/ close partners..
- more likely to tell lies to strangers than close ppl
- most lies told in context of relationships.; most lying occurs in romantic relationships, “reserve most serious ones”
Types of deception
- Partner-focused: to avoid hurting other, help partner maintain esteem, protect partner’s relationship w/ 3rd party. (soc polite and beneficial)- most forgivable.
- Self-focused: enhance/ protect self-image, shield self from anger, etc. (more serious)
- Relationship-focused: limit relational harm by avoiding conflict (beneficial and destructive)
Detecting Deception
no completely…
- no completely reliable indicators!
- hesitations, etc. indicate gen anxiety
- most reliable: compare normal vs current behavior (Sheldon’s ticks)
Variables that influence deception
Truth bias: expect others to be honest, so enter convos w/out suspicion & don’t look for deceptive behavior. Strong w relationships- by Receiver
Behavioral control: control nervous behaviors–by Senders (Sheldon)
Behavioral familiarity: know partner’s communication, so can’t lie about it–by Receiver
Informational familiarity: know stuff about partner, so can’t lie about it–by Receiver
