Section 3 Flashcards
Cranium
Enclose and protect the brain. Makes chewing and head movements possible
Sinus
Cranial bones that are air filled cavities lined with mucous membrane and passageways to the nasal cavity
Frontal bone
Forms the anterior portion of the skull above the eyes.
Parietal bone
One parietal bone is located on each side of the skull just behind the frontal bone.
Occipital bone
Joins the parietal bone along the lambdoidal sutures. Forms back of the skull and the base of the cranium
Temporal bone
Each side of the skull joins the parietal bone along a squamous suture. Parts of the sides and base of the brain
Sphenoid bone
Wedged between several other bones in the anterior portion of the cranium. Central part and two wing like structures
Ethmoid bone
Located in front of the sphenoid bone. Two masses one on each side of the nasal cavity
Facial skeleton
Thirteen immovable bones and a moveable lower jawbone. Form basic shape of the face and provide attachments. Move jaw and control facial expressions.
Maxillae
Form upper jaw
Palatine bones
L-shaped palatine. Located behind the maxillae.
Zygomatic bones
Form the prominences of the cheeks below and to the sides of the eye. Processes form a zygomatic process.
Lacrimal bones
Thin, scale like structure located in the medial wall of each orbit between the ethmoid bone and the maxilla
Nasal bones
Long, thin, and nearly rectangular. Lie side by side and are fused at the midline where they form the bridge of the nose
Vomer bones
Thin, flat vomer is located along the midline within the nasal cavity. Joins the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone and form nasal septum
