Section 1 Flashcards
Epiphysis
At the end of each bone is the expanded portion. It articulates with another bone
Articular cartilage
On its outer surface, articulating portion of the epiphysis is coated with a layer of hyaline cartilage
Diaphysis
Shaft of the bone
Periosteum
Tough, vascular covering of fibrous tissue
Compact bone
the wall of the diaphysis is mainly composed of this tightly packed tissue
Spongy bone
Or cancellous. The epiphysis are composed of this. Thin layer of compact bones on surface. Has numerous branching bony plates.
Medullary cavity
Compact bone in the diaphysis of a long bone forms a semirigid tube, has hollow chamber.
Endosteum
Thin layer of cells.
Marrow
Specialized type of soft connective tissue
Osteocytes
Located in very small bony chambers called lacuna which form concentric circles around central canals. Communicate with nearby cells.
Intramembranous bones
Broad flat bones of the skull.
Osteoblasts
Primitive connective tissue cells enlarge and differentiate into bone forming cells
Endochondral bones
Most of the bones of the skeleton are these. Develop from masses of hyaline cartilage shaped like future bony structures.
Epiphyseal plate
A spongy bone is deposited in the diaphysis and in the epiphysis a band of cartilage. Or metaphysics.
Osteoclasts
Large, multinucleated cells. They break down the calcified extra cellular matrix.
