Section 2 Flashcards
Axial skeleton
Part of the skeleton that has the bones of the head and trunk of a vertebrate. Has 80 bones and is made up of six parts; the skull bones, the ossicles of the middle ear, the hyoid bone, the rib cage, sternum and the vertebral column.
Skull
Composed of the cranium or brain case and facial bones
Cranium
Brain case
Hyoid bone
Located in the neck between lower jaw and larynx. Supports the tongue. Helps move the tongue.
Vertebral column
Back bone. Involves the sacrum and coccyx. Made of many vertebrates
Sacrum
Part of the pelvis.
Coccyx
Tailbone. Attached to sacrum
Thoracic cage
Protects the organs. Has ribs and sternum
Ribs
12 pairs. Articulate posteriorly with thoracic vertebrae
Sternum
Ribs attach anteriorly
Appendicular skeleton
Bones of upper and lower limbs and the bones that anchor the limbs to the axial skeleton
Pectoral girdle
Part of appendicular skeleton. Connects bones of upper limbs to axial skeleton and aids in upper limb movements
Scapula
Shoulder blade is the bone that connects the humerus (upper arm bone) with the clavicle (collar bone).
Clavicle
Collarbone. Long bone that serves as a strut between the shoulder blade and the sternum.
Upper limbs
Each upper limb has humerus, two forearm bones, and a hand.
Humerus
Arm bone
Radius
Forearm bone
Ulna
Forearm bone
Carpals
