Section 2.1 Atoms into Ions Flashcards
What is a compound and how it is formed?
A compound is when two or more elements react to form a new substance. It is formed with chemical bonding
Is separating compounds difficult?
Yes because they are chemically bonded
Why do atoms react?
To achieve a full outermost shell (8) making them stable
What are the three types of bonding?
Covalent, ionic and metallic bonding
What happens to the electrons of atoms in ionic bonding?
Atoms lose or gains electrons
What are the products of ionic bonding? What is there charge and electronic structure?
Ions, they have either a positive or negative charge. They have the electronic structure of a noble gas (8 electrons in its outermost shell)
Which atoms tend to lose electrons and which atoms tend to gain electrons?
Metals atoms tend to lose electrons and non-metal atoms tend to gain electrons
What is the force between ions in an ionic bonds?
The
