What are the Instrument Flight rules within and outside controlled airspace?
A
Within controlled airspace:
- 33 - Minimum height
- 34 - Quadrantal and semi-circular rule
- 35 - Flight plan and air traffic control clearance
- 36 - Compliance with air traffic control clearance and notified procedures
- 37 - Position reports
Outside controlled airspace:

33: Minimum height
What is the minimum height rule?
A
An aircraft shall fly 1,000ft above highest obstacle within 5nm, unless:
- Taking off or landing
- Otherwise authorised by competent authority
- Aircraft flies at or below 3,000ft amsl, remains COC + SIS with vis of at least 800m
Must still comply with low flying rules

34: Quadrantal and semi-circular rules
What are they?
A
An aircraft in level flight above 3,000ft amsl or above the transition altitude, whichever is higher, shall be flown at a level (with altimeter set to 1013.2) appropriate to its magnetic track as follows:
Flights below 19,500ft:
- Less than 90° - Odd thousands of feet
- 90° but less than 180° - Odd thousands of feet + 500ft
- 180° but less than 270° - Even thousands of feet
- 270° but less than 360° - Even thousands of feet + 500ft
Flights above 19,500ft:
- Less than 180° - 21, 23, 25 thousand feet etc up to 41 then every 4000ft after
- 180° but less than 360° - 20, 22, 24 thousand feet etc up to 40, then 43 and every 4000ft after
