What is Osteoarthritis?
When the cartilage at the ends of bones break down
What is a sprain?
Injuries to ligaments
Ligament - when a joint gets twisted
What is the osteoporosis disease?
A disease that happens when the bones in your body have to release nutrients into your bloodstream to keep you healthy for an extended period of time. This makes your bones get more and more fragile over time. This can happen from an eating disorder or not getting enough nutrients from food.
What is a fracture?
A partial or complete break in the bone caused by excess bending stress on the bone
What is Calcium and what are some examples of it?
Calcium is a mineral
Some examples include milk, cheese, orange juice, broccoli, and sardines
What are the bone cells
Osteoblasts - responsible for bone growth and the uptake of minerals from the blood
Osteocytes - regulate mineral homeostasis
Osteoclasts - dissolve minerals in the bone matrix and release them back into blood
What is arthritis?
Swelling and tenderness in one or more joints
How do weight-bearing exercises help your bones?
bones respond by adding more bone cells to increase their bone density. Denser bones do not break as easily.
What are two good habits to keep you skeletal system healthy?
By eating well and getting enough exercise
How much calcium does the average person need for day? What vitamin helps you process calcium?
Teenagers should get about 1300 mg of calcium per day
Vitamin D helps you process calcium - teenagers should get 5 micrograms of vitamin d everyday
What are three good sources of calcium?
Yogurt, Milk, Soy milk, Buttermilk, Cheese, Spinach, Turnip greens, Kale, Tofu, Sardines, Salmon, Fruit, Grapefruit juice, Orange juice
