section 1 - the skeletal system Flashcards
what is Bone marrow?
soft, spongy tissue that has many blood vessels and is found in the center of most bones, purpose is to create new blood cells
what is cartilage?
its a type of dense connective tissue that provides a smooth surface for the movement of bones at joints.
what is a growth plate?
zones of cartilage in the bone that allows growth of the bones, the area allows bones to grow longer as the kid grows
what is a ligament?
its a band of fibrous connective tissue that holds bones together and keeps them in place.
What is periosteum?
sheath outside your bones that supplies them with blood, nerves and the cells that help them grow and heal
What is the skeletal system?
the skeletal system is a system that consists of all the bones of the body
How does the skeleton support the body?
protects internal organs, provides attachment surfaces for muscles, produces blood cells, stores minerals
Are bones living?
yes they are! they have a blood supply and nerves, and are a living tissue
What are the main functions of the skeletal system?
The main functions are support, protection, movement, making blood cells, storage
What is spongy bone?
(cancellous or trabecular bone)
its found in the long bones and it is surrounded by compact bone
What is compact bone?
(cortical bone)
it surrounds spongy bone and its heavy, tough, and compact in nature
How many bones are there in the fully developed human body (adult)?
204 bones
