Section 1.4 Tissues and Organs Flashcards
What does differentiate mean?
When cells differentiate they become specialised to carry out a particular function
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with similar structure working together to form a particular function
Example of tissues.
Animal tissues: Muscular tissue, glandular tissue, epithelial tissue
Plant tissues: Epidermal tissues, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, xylem, phloem
What is an organ?
A group of tissues working together to form a particular function
Examples of organs?
Animal organs: Stomach, heart
Plant organ: Leaves, stem, root
What is the function of muscular tissues?
animal tissue
The function of the muscular tissue is to contract to bring about movement
What is the function of glandular tissue?
animal tissue
Glandular tissues contain secretory cells that can produce and secrete substances such as enzymes and hormones
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
animal tissue
The epithelial tissue covers the outside of your body as well as your internal organs
What is the function of epidermal tissues?
plant tissue
Epidermal tissues cover the plants’ surfaces and protects them
What is the function of palisade mesophyll?
plant tissue
Palisade mesophyll contains lots of chloroplasts and can carry out photosynthesis
What is the function of spongy mesophyll?
plant tissue
Spongy mesophyll has some chloroplasts for photosynthesis but also has big air spaces and a large surface area to make diffusion of gases easier
What is the function of xylem?
plant tissue
Xylem is one of the transport tissues in plants, it carries water and minerals from the roots to the leaves
What is the function of phloem?
plant tissue
Phloem is one of the transport tissues in plants, it carries the food prepared by the leaves to different parts of the plant
