Section 1.1 Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
What are the two types of cells?
Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes
Name the features of an animal cells.
Nucleus, mitochondria, cytoplasm, cell membrane, ribosomes.
What is the function of a nucleus?
Controls all the activities of the cell. It contains genes on chromosomes that carry instructions for making proteins needed to build new cells or organisms
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Structure where oxygen is used and where most of the energy is released during respiration
What is the function of cytoplasm?
A liquid gel where organelles (features) of the cells are found and where chemical reactions take place
What is the function of cell membrane?
Covers the cell and controls the passage of substances into an out of the cell
What is the function of ribosomes?
Where protein synthesis takes place, making all the proteins needed in the cell
What are the features of a plant cell?
All the features of an animal cells plus a cell wall, chloroplasts and permanent vacuole
What is the function of the cell wall?
Is made of cellulose and strengthens the cell and gives it support
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Found in green parts of the plant. Contains chlorophyll used for photosynthesis.
Do all plants/ parts of plants have chloroplasts?
No, plants which are not green do not have chloroplasts. Certain parts of plants such as the roots also do not have chloroplasts as photosynthesis cannot occur, therefore its not needed
What is the function of a permanent vacuole?
Is the space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap. It keeps the cell rigid and supports the plant.
