Section 12 - Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions Flashcards
Describe the heat transfer in exothermic reactions
Heat energy is given out (the room temperature rises).
Describe the heat transfer in endothermic reactions
Heat energy is taken from the surroundings (the room temperature drops)
Does it take or release energy to break bonds?
It takes energy to break bonds
Does it take or release energy to break bonds?
Energy is released when bonds are made
What makes a reaction endothermic?
In a reaction, if more energy is taken in to break bonds than is given out when bonds are made, the process is endothermic - it will take in heat energy
What is the overall enthalpy change of an endothermic reaction?
Positive
What makes a reaction exothermic?
If more energy is given out when bonds are made than is taken in when bonds are broken, the process is exothermic - it will give out heat energy.
What is the overall enthalpy change of an exothermic reaction?
Negative
In an endothermic reaction, do the products or reactants have more energy?
Products
In an exothermic reaction, do the products or reactants have more energy?
Reactants
