When did a representative government begin in America?
1619.
What were representatives originally called by Virginia colonists.
Burgesses.
How did the English monarch establish a colony?
Through a charter.
What happened to early colonies that challenged England’s authority?
The colony would be stripped of its charter then become a royal colony under the control of the monarch who appointed a governor.
Did England have control over the colonies the 1600s to the 1700s?
Technically yes, however they were busy fighting wars and paid little attention to them.
Did colonists try to preserve rights?
Citizens were used to having a voice in the government so they resisted any efforts to ignore their rights or weaken their legislatures which were typically made by colonial governors.
How did being an English citizen in the colonies in the 1600s and 1700s differ from being a citizen today?
