Why do some people use the bible for moral decisions? (4)
- It is the word of God
- Has God’s teachings on how to behave (Decalogue).
- Has Jesus’s teaches on how to live sermon on the mount.
- Has records of Jesus’s actions however some do not take it that seriously as it is written by humans inspired by God.
Why do people use the church for moral decisions? (3)
- The Church is the ‘body of Christ.’
- God speaks to the world today through the Church.
- By following the church all believe the same thing
why do some use conscience to make moral decisions? (3)
- Believe its god speaking to them.
- Church says they should follow their conscience
- St Paul the conscience should be the last part of decision making process.
Why do some not use conscience (3)
- Could be mistaken eg the Yorkshire Ripper
- Follow the Church or the bible means all do the same.
- Life would be chaotic if everyone did their own thing and followed their conscience and not the law.
Using situation ethics to make moral decisions (4)
Founded by Joseph Fletcher should do the most loving thing in any situation..
- Jesus acted in a similar way
- Should only do things that lead to good results
- Jesus said love thy neighbor
- Christianity is a religion of love
Why do some not use situation ethics? (4)
- Bible is the word of god and should not be ruled over.
- Christians should all do the same thing.
- Church knows whats best.
- Can never know all the facts.
Why are human rights important to Christians? (4)
- Right to live is covered by teaching of sanctity of life.
- All humans are made in God’s image and are equal.
- Christians are protected by these Laws and so should help protect others.
- Human Rights ban discrimination.
Human Rights can cause problems for Christians… (4)
- Some are against civil partnership which are legal in the UK
- Some are against interfaith Marriages
- Some are against Homosexuality and them adopting children.
- Roman Catholics do not allow women priests which is a form of discrimination.
Why should we take part in democratic and electoral processes…? (4)
- Government decides on what to do with the Taxes and voting gives you some control.
- They make new Laws in which u can influence
- You get to make some decisions on schools and the NHS.
- People fought for the vote and it should be respected.
Christian teachings on moral duties and responsibilities (3)
- Golden Rule Treat others how you would like to be treated.
- Parable of the sheep and goats states you will be judged on how you treat others.
- Am I my brothers keeper Christians have a duty too look after eachother. Brother Cain killed his brother Abel.
Non religious argument For GE and cloning (4)
- Could lead to cures for incurable diseases
- Cybrids do not involve loss of human lives
- Genetic research is closely monitored by Governments and the Law.
- Some countries already do it.
Non religious arguments against GE (4)
- No evidence of the long term affects
- Effects are irreversible.
- Gives too much power to scientists.
- Treats the human body simply as a commodity.
Liberal Protestants on GE (2)
- Jesus was a healer
2. Creating cells is not the same as creating people
Catholics on GE (3)
- Agree it on curing illness but not use of embryo
- Killing embryo is killing potential life Murder.
- Life begins at conception
Why are some completely against GE (2)
- Humans should not interfere with God’s will
