Section 1: a) Characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
What are the main characteristics of living things (MRS H GREN)?
Movement Respiration Sensitivity Homeostasis Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition
What is movement?
Movement is when living organisms move and change their position.
What is respiration?
Respiration is when living organisms create chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in their cells to release energy.
What is sensitivity?
Sensitivity is when living organisms detect or sense stimuli and respond to them.
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is when living organisms maintain a constant internal environment in the body. The nervous system and hormones are responsible for controlling this.
What is growth?
Growth is when living organisms permanently increase their size or dry mass (mass of solid matter with all solid removed) by increasing the the number or size of their cells.
What is reproduction?
Reproduction is when living organisms make more of the same kind of organism as themselves.
What is excretion?
Excretion is when living organisms get rid of toxic materials, waste products of metabolism and excess substances.
What is nutrition?
Nutrition is when living organisms take in and absorb nutrients such as organic substances and mineral ions. These nutrients contain the raw materials or energy needed for growth and tissue repair.
