difference between essential and desirable criteria
essential: candidates must have this to do the job otherwise will be eliminated.
desirable: these are useful but not essential to do the job.
what are the 5 thingies in the big five test

conscientious (impulsive vs responsible)
extraverted
agreeable (easily irritated vs considerate)
neuroticism (when ur rly sad and pessimistic)

what are 3 types of selection methods
structured interviews
work samples
aptitude and psychometric tests
what are the two types of structured interviews
completelly structured: questions asked will be determined before the interview
semi-structured: general topics are determined beforehand but there is flexibility.
3 things to prepare for interview, 3 to do during intnerview, and 3 to do afterwaards
- dress professionally, be on time, research the company
- use positive body language, speak clearly and professionally, be honest with answers.
- thank interviewer for their time, give handshake, follow up with a thank you email or letter.
advantages and disadvantages of structured interviews
comprehensive, fair and relevant planned questions
interviewee can be dishonest, can be difficult to remember all info discussed, or interviewer bias.
talk about work samples
usually done in physicall or manual jobs, but cann also be used for group work or decision making. require employees to do a piece of work similar to what theyd rly do. they have standardised instructions and ppll have a specific amount of time to complete work. employers can easily compare performance this way.
advantages and disadvantages of work samples
realistic, fair selection, and predictive of work performance.
job specific - don’t test entire skill set, expensive and time consuming.
what is psychometric testing, and advantages/disadvantages
a test that measures psychological attributes and includes measures of knowledge, ability, intelligence and personality
standardised, quick, and predict job performance
negative applicant reactions, costly to make a good one, and personality can be faked.
why are references not that good
many dont say negative things, and they are selected by candidates based on who would provide good feedback.
