he is so desperate to hide what has happened and keep it hidden that he offers to pay them.

hyde does not want to be found but utterson is determined

jekyll keeps secrets, even from his friends.

window to the soul - it is clear he is hiding something but he continues to keep this thing a secret.

he is being pushed away and lied to

dr jekyll’s secrets are being revealed slowly.

the “fog” which is seen multiple times throughout the book represents the layer of secrets cast over the characters, as the truth is made difficult to see.
“Mr. Hyde had only used a couple of rooms”
we are unsure of what he is doing and why he has only needed to use a few rooms, which shows us that he is hiding something.
“the rooms bore every mark of having been recently and hurriedly ransacked”
this further emphasises that Hyde is hiding something and is up to no good in the rooms as he wants to hide it as soon as possible and get away.
