“even his friendship seemed to be
founded in a similar catholicity of good nature” chapter 1

“His affections, like ivy, where the growth of time” chapter 1
Metaphor - Just as ivy develops slowly and organically, so too does uttersons friendships take slow, gradual time to build up.
“I incline to cains heresy,” he used to say quaintly, “I let my brother go to the devil in his own way” chapter 1
Bible reference - utterson is very tolerant of peoples actions, which do not falter his loyalty towards them. He wishes not to interfere with how other people live their lives.
“you could see by his looks that he cherished for mr utterson a sincere and warm affection”chapter 3

“O, i know he’s a good fellow - you needn’t frown - an excellent fellow, and i always mean to see more of him, but a hidebound pedant for all of that; an ignorant, blatant pedant.” chapter 3
dr Jekyll has had disagreements with dr Lanyon, but still mentions good things about him. This shows loyalty between the two old friends.
“I should like to leave it in your hands, Utterson; you would judge wisely, I am sure; I have so great a trust in you.” chapter 5
Jekyll is trusting utterson with the letter for, hyde; he trusts that utterson will understand what to do with it and it’s contents.

“Now that the evil had been withdrawn, a new life began for Dr Jekyll. He came out of his seclusion, renewed relations with his friends, became once more their familiar guest and entertainer” chapter 6
“familiar guest and entertainer” jekyll is finally happy and friendly,
“I mean from henceforth to lead a life of extreme seclusion; you must not be
surprised, nor must you doubt my friendship, if my door is often shut even to you” chapter 6
jekyll is going through a lot yet he wishes to express this and still remain loyal to utterson.
commas emphasise this as they symbolise pauses which are important in expressing how difficult it is for jekyll to show how he has been feeling.
“A great responsibility came on the trustee, to disregard
dive at once to the bottom of these mysteries; but professional honour
faith to his dead friend were stringent obligations; and the packet slept in
the inmost corner of his private safe.” chapter 6
this is Utterson having a strong loyalty to his dead friend Sir Carew Denvers even through the harsh temptation to find what is really happening. This is emphasized the word choice “stringent obligations”.
