he has good and evil tendencies, his personality is not just one thing, but rather a duality.

he is complex, he is jekyll and hyde, dual.

The once even,y balanced duality is beginning to shift as Jekyll begins to lead more towards an evil side of himself.
“The man trampled calmly over the child’s body”
The dual nature of trampled and calm represents the differences between jekyll and hyde.
Jekyll is a light hearted, noble man - Hyde engages in criminal behaviour
The duality and double appearance between the two, shows how anyone can be dual - a mix of good and evil
“All human beings are coming led out of good and evil”
explores how despite what is seen on the surface, everyone has both good and bad aspects of themselves.
Jekyll is presented as light: “He now sat opposite to the fire.. with every mark of kindness and affection”
Hyde is presented as dark: “black sneering coolness”
This displays the opposite natures of both characters as Jekyll is considered good and hyde is considered bad.
The duality of Jekyll’s home
Jekyll lives in a pleasant area, with a luxury home, with “a great air of wealth and comfort” however this is connected to a run down, sinister laboratory in which he becomes Hyde and his evil shines through. This is representative of Jekyll and Hydes actual appearances.
“Shop fronts stood along that thoroughfare with an air of invitation, like rows of smiling sales women”
Vs
“Just at that point a certain sinister block of building thrust forward its gable on the street”
This displays the duality between the settings and as the building “thrusts” into view this is reminiscent of Jekylls evil side suddenly being made clear.
