Secrecy is necessary
‘I am embarrassed of my long tongue’- leads to reputation and the gentleman’s code which was highly thought of in the Victorian era.

‘I see little of him now.’-Distance is created with Jekyll to ensure he can keep Hyde a secret.

Enfield states he ‘come back from some place and the end of the world’- He can’t ruin his reputation and livelihood.
so he has to keep it secret.

Secrecy is supernatural and uncanny
‘If that was my master, why had he a mask upon his face’-Hyde is hiding his true identity- he can’t be revealed.
‘ No where was there any trace of Henry Jekyll dead or alive’- People can’t just disappear- Supernatural and uncanny disappearance- gothic feature
‘Indeed we see very little of him on this side’- disappears frequently- shows he is secluded.
‘with extraordinary quickness’- uncanny feature to make sure his secrets are hidden.
‘Not to be opened till the death or disappearance of dr Henry Jekyll’-Arouses much suspicion from the reader- people can’t just disappear
secrecy is all around
‘Neither bell nor knocker’- shows that secrecy is obvious in some places
‘flickering of firelight’ and the ‘ shadow on the roof’- references to light show the difference between truth and secrets even in random streets- all around.Gothic feature of using setting to create tense.
‘Like a district of some city in a nightmare’-SIMILE. Eerie setting has symbolic use- links to the gothic era
‘windows barred with iron- almost describes the house as prison to show Hyde has done wrong.
‘ dingy windowless structure’-repeated motif to show he is hiding secrets.
