Piggy- Lord of the Flies Flashcards
‘Closed circuit of sympathy, with Piggy on the outside’ (Chapter 1)
‘Piggy was a bore; his fat, his ass mar and his matter of fact ideas were dull’ (chapter 4)
Piggy is seperated from the start because of his:
- asthma (ass-mar)
- lower class- accent
- weight
Because of this his intelligence is ignored.
‘we used his specks, he helped that way’
The only way Piggy is used at the beginning is for his glasses to light the fire
‘I got the conch, ain’t i Ralph’
(chapter 2)
Piggy is insecure- looks for validation from ralph.
‘I can’t think, not like Piggy’
‘For all his ludicrous body, had brains’
(chapter 5)
Ralph starts to realize and worship Piggys importance.
Piggy is heavily judged on his looks over his brains. This can relate to the modern world as people tend to listen to sporty higher class people more.
‘Piggy came and stood on the outside of the triangle’
(chapter 5)
Piggy is still an outsider in the middle even after being recognised for his brains.
‘They came for something else Ralph-what am i going to do’
Jack steals his glasses which symbolizes piggys last hope of rescue and shows he has no sign of hope now.
(foreshadows his later death)
‘The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee’
’ The body of Piggy was gone’
(chapter 11)
Piggys death along with the smashing of the conch symbolises the end of civilisation and rules.
Shows the end of intelligence on the island.
