Secondary tectonic hazards? Flashcards
Fire
Fires can occur as a result of an earthquake, volcanic eruption, or landslide.
Flooding
Flooding can occur when rivers overflow or when a tsunami or debris flow reaches the coast.
Landslide Damming
A landslide can block a river and cause a lake to form, which can lead to further flooding.
Landslide-Induced Tsunamis
A landslide into a lake or ocean can generate a tsunami.
Tsunami Runup
The height that a tsunami wave reaches on land.
Ashfall / Tephra
The deposition of ash from a volcanic eruption
Lava Flows
The movement of molten rock (lava) from a volcano
Pyroclastic Flows
A fast-moving mixture of hot ash, gas, and rock fragments that move down a volcano’s slope.
Lahars
A type of volcanic mudflow that can occur when ash and rock fragments mix with water.
Gas Emissions
The release of toxic or harmful gases from a volcanic eruption or other tectonic activity.
Ground Deformation
Changes in the shape of the ground as a result of tectonic activity, such as uplift or subsidence.
