Primary tectonic hazards? Flashcards
Earthquakes
The sudden release of energy stored within the Earth’s crust that causes the ground to shake.
Volcanic Eruptions
The explosive release of magma, ash, and gas from a volcano.
Tsunamis
A large ocean wave that is caused by an underwater earthquake, volcanic eruption, or landslide.
Landslides
The movement of rock, soil, and debris down a slope due to gravity.
Rockfall
The falling of rocks from cliffs, mountains, or other high areas.
Debris Flows
A type of landslide that occurs when soil and rock are mixed with water, creating a fast-moving mixture of material.
Subsidence
The settling or sinking of the ground due to a loss of support.
Ground Shaking
The shaking of the ground caused by an earthquake or other tectonic activity.
Seismic Waves
Energy waves that travel through the Earth’s crust and cause ground movement.
E.G P-waves (| |expansion compression|||compression | |expansion), S-waves(P waves but can go side to side) and surface waves ( or Love/reigleigh waves which go on all axis) . P-waves and S-waves are sometimes collectively called body waves.
