Secondary storage Flashcards
What are the three types of secondary storage?
Optical
Magnetic
Solid state
A flying hobby drone is fitted with a gimbal and camera. State two reasons why solid state storage is a suitable choice, and one reason why a hard disk would be unsuitable for this application.
- SSD has no moving parts
- The SSD is portable
- Magnetic storage is too heavy
Why would you use secondary storage?
Secondary storage is needed because ROM is read only and RAM is volatile, so you need something when there is no power, backs up data files and archiving.
What are the capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost of Magnetic storage (hard disk)?
Capacity - 750 GB - 3TB
Speed - High read write speed
Portability - Heavy/poor portability
Durability - dropping this device woudl cause damage
Reliability - Can be used again and again but does have a limited life (a good few years).
Cost - Relatively cheap
What are the capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost of Magnetic storage(magnetic tape)?
Capacity - 1 - 5 TB
Speed - High write speeds but slow read speeds
Portability - Fairly small and light (but reading the device is not, because if the data you need is at the end of the tape you have to read/play the tape from the start –which takes time (known as serial access)
Durability - Fairly durable
Reliability - Can be used again and again
Cost - Cheap
What are the capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost of optical storage (CD ROM)?
Capacity - 650MB (Small)
Speed - Moderate read/write speeds
Portability - Very portable and light
Durability - Fair durability, can survive the odd knock but scratches can damage the data.
Reliability - CD-Rs are write once but can be read over and over (CD-RW can be reused)
What are the capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost of optical storage (Blue ray)?
Capacity - 4.37GB (DVD) 25GB (Standard Blu-Ray)(Small)
Speed - Moderate read/write speeds
Portability - Very portable and light
Durability - Fair durability, can survive the odd knock but scratches can damage the data.
Reliability - DVD-Rs are write once but can be read over and
over.
What are the capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost of Solid State drive (in a computer)?
Capacity - 64GB – 480GB (Moderate)
Speed - Super Fast (Read/Write)
Portability - Very portable (small and lightweight)
Durability - No moving parts so can survive knocks and scrapes
Reliability - Can be re-used over and over
What are the capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost of Flash SD card?
Capacity - 16GB – 64GB
Speed - Super Fast (Read/Write)
Portability - Extremely portable (small and lightweight)
Durability - No moving parts so can survive knocks and scrapes
Reliability - Can be re-used over and over
What are the capacity , speed, portability, durability. reliability and cost of flash memory stick?
Capacity - 1GB – 64GB
Speed - Super Fast (Read/Write)
Portability - Extremely portable (small and lightweight)
Durability - No moving parts so can survive knocks and
scrapes
Reliability - Can be re-used over and over
What is secondary storage?
The operating system where data and programs are held when not in use.
What is magnetic storage?
Magnetic storage uses different patterns of magnetization in a magnetizable material to store data.
What is flash memory?
A flash of electric current forces electrons into a barrier. The different arrangement of electrons gives us the data.
What is optical memory?
Optical storage consists of marks arranged in patterns. When writing in optical media, the laser burns pits into the shiny surface, when reading optical media, a laser is shined onto the surface when they beam hits the land it reflects zero and when the beam hits pits, it reflects 1.
