Keratinized cells. Flaky.
Scale (Dry skin).
Dried serum, blood or exudates.
Crust (Scab).
Thinning of skin surface and loss of skin markings.
Atrophy. (Aged skin).
Loss of part of the epidermis. Depressed and moist; glistening. Follows rupture of vesicle or bulla.
Erosion (Scab).
Loss of epidermis and dermis. Concave. Variable size.
Ulcer. (Decubiti, chancre).
Linear crack or break from epidermis to dermis. May or may not be dry.
Fissure. (Athlete’s foot. Cracks at corner of mouth).
Rough, thickened epidermis secondary to persistent itching, rubbing or irritation. Often on flexor surfaces.
Lichenification. (Chronic dermatitis).
Fibrous tissue that replaces normal skin following injury/lac.
Scar. (Healed wound).
Irregularly shaped, elevated, scar that grows beyond boundaries of wound. Caused by excessive collagen formation during healing.
Keloid. (Keloid scar).
