SECONDARY DEFENCE - Human Protection Flashcards
what are the job of white blood cells
get rid of pathogens in tissues of body
what are the two types of WBC we learn
Phagocytes and Lymphocytes
what is the job of phagocytes
engulf pathogens in a vesicle and use enzymes to digest
what do lymphocytes produce
antibodies
what is the job of antibodies
bind to antigens on the pathogen surface
stop pathogens from damaging our cells until phagocytes destroy them - put pathogen in a prison of antibodies
what is the problem with anitbodies
antibodies have specific shapes and only bind to certain antigens
what happens when a lymphocyte creates the correct antibody which is complimentary in shape to the antigen
they will divide some memory cells are created and more lymphocytes are made with the right antibody
what do memory cells do
stay in the body for decades and it means if the same pathogen invades we don’t get ill as before
when a pathogen attacks the second time what are the 3 factors that prevent us from getting ill? (think graph)
antibodies are produced
1. faster (steeper gradient)
2. Sooner
3. In higher quantity
