monoclonal antibodies - production Flashcards
what is an antibody
a protein made by lymphocyte which bind to certain anitgens because the shapes of the binding sites are complementary to the antigen on the pathogen
true of false lymphocytes only produce 1 type of antibody
TRUE
what are monoclonal antibodies
cells made from clones of one lymphocyte
what is the first step of making monoclonal antibodies
inject a small animal like mouse with a pathogen or antigen
what happens to the injected animal
mouse will have immune reaction
making lymphocytes with specific antibody produced to neutralize antigen
what is done to the animal (step 3)
harvest the specific lymphocytes from it
what happens to lymphocytes once removed from animal
they die quickly
what happens to the lymphocytes that are removed
they are fused with cancer cells to produce hybridoma cells
why is cancer good in this case
divides uncontrollably to keep lymphocyte alive
what happens to the hybridoma cells that produce correct antibodies
isolated in environment to keep creating more of the same
