Master Food inspections? As per MSN 1845
Good Hygiene, cleanliness and Bacteria prevention
Diet and nutrition requirements (allergies and religious)
Quantity of food
Variety of Food
Storage of food (Refrigeration 4 degrees, freezing -21 degrees, & Dry stores)
Expiration dates
Consistent to the voyage
Sanitation certificate
What effect does ice secretion have on stability and vessel? Considerations ?
Freshwater ice accretion not so bad
Saltwater ice accretion accrues in an irregular way, vessel can trim to the weather/spray side.
Raise G, reduce GM
Reduce freeboard
Aerials (Range reduction or even snapping)
Radar scanners can freeze if stopped
Captain must report
Dry Docking - Preparations and Master requirements
Docking plan sent to the dock master (arrange blocks and location of spd & echo sounders)
Cranes stowed and secured
Hatches and beams closed
Watertight doors closed
Free surface removed / empty or fill tanks
Stability calculations to account for rise of ‘G”
Trim to the stern (Stern block first, stern is a stronger structure)
Critical Moment/point
Diver down to check
Sound tanks to ensure a similar state for departure
Lock up ship lavatories
Underwater inspection
Fire lines / 2 points Means of Access / Fenders and lines / Garbage and sewage requirements / crew accommodation
Dry docking- What is the critical moment? What is P force?
Just before the vessel takes the blocks fore and aft and needs to maintain positive stability at this time with an adequate GM.
P force. as water is pumped out the buoyancy of the vessel is transferred to the keel blocks causing UPTHRUST.
Dry dock - Procedure for reflooding a dry dock?
Hull is watertight, all plugs are in
All underwater repairs are complete
Hull painted and anodes refitted
All surveys completed
Sufficient crew onboard, power available on deck
Stability is confirmed as acceptable when re-floating
Polar code - What is the polar code?
- Safe ship operation and protection of the marine environment in Polar waters by addressing risks not mitigated by other areas of the IMO
- 2017
- Equipment ; Windows, Door seals, Lifeboats, clothing, Ice removal, Fire equipment, Heated Sea chest,
- Construction ; Categories ABC, Ice stability, Material, Structure Ice class
- Operations - Navigation, Manning (certs),
ICE - Precautions on entering Polar areas
Crew - Provisions, Additional PPE, Anti Slip
Check Fuel reserves
Certification - Officers and Ice Class, Insurance
Equipment - Radar (don’t stop spinning,) Anchor capstans (cover, low temperature oil/grease, Drain fire lines, additional light bulbs, additional LSA supplies)
Navigation - Charts, Decreased compass reliability

Towage / Salvage : What is the difference between the two?
Salvage is required when there is danger
tow
The two cannot run concurrently.
Towage / Salvage - When can a valid claim for salvage take place?
- The property being salved is in danger
- The service rendered must be voluntary
- Wholly or partly successful (scopic)
- marine property
- in the ocean
