Why are they known as Atypical Anti-psychotics?
Broader spectrum of action
Controlling both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia
Why are they viewed as better than conventional antipsychotics?
Cause less severe EPS side effects
Not cardiotoxic
What is their mechanism of action?
Largely unknown but thought to affect block different receptors in brain.
Thought mainly to act on D2 receptors (but only loosely bound).
Also thought to block serotonin and alpha-adrenergic receptors
By taking these class of drugs it is thought to increase the risk of what?
Weight gain
Diabetes
Hypertriglyceridaemia
What are the serious adverse effects related to this class of drugs?
Agranulocytosis
Orthostatic hypotension
Neuroleptic malignant syndrom
What are the common side effects associated with this drug class?
Tachycardia, transient fever, sedation, dizziness, headache, light headedness, somnolence, anxiety, nervousness, hostility, insomnia, nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, constipation, secondary parkinsonism, Akathisia, EPS
