Overgrowth of Pityrosporum ovale (also called Malassezia furfur in its hyphal form) together with a strong cutaneous immune response to this yeast produces the characteristic inflammation and scaling of seborrhoeic eczema.

crusty/yellow/waxy affects sebaceous glands (oil)

infants - not usually bad enough to distress infant
young adults - expect scalp/nose blepharitis type symptoms
elderly - expect more severe widespread involvement
