Contact and irritant eczema Flashcards
clues to detecting this type?
if excema is in an unusual or localized distribution/no FH or personal hx of atopic disease. then consider an exogenous agent as being responsible especially if exacerbation noted at workplace.
mechanisms?
There are two possible mechanisms: direct irritation or an allergic reaction (type IV delayed hypersensitivity). A detailed history of occupation, hobbies, cosmetic products, clothing and contact with chemicals is necessary.
allergic contact cause?
repeated exposure to a chemical substance but only in those people who are susceptible to develop an allergic reaction. It is common, occurring in up to 4% of some populations. common culprits are NICKEL, chromate, LATEX (surgical gloves), perfume, plants. if suspicous, arrange patch testing.
irrritant contact excema cause?
Irritant contact eczema can occur in any individual. It
often occurs on the hands after repeated exposures to
irritants such as detergents, soaps or bleach. It is therefore common in housewives, cleaners, hairdressers, mechanics and nurses.
