prevalence?
It is estimated that 10% of people have some
form of eczema at any one time, and up to 40% of the population will have an episode of eczema during their lifetime.
atopic fact
hypersensitivity + It is commoner in early life, occurring at some stage during childhood in up to 10–20% of all children.
Exacerbating factors?
Infection, strong detergents, chemicals, Teething in young children, anxiety and stress, cat and dog fur,
)dust mites), food allergens, diary in young children
atopic clinical features
The commonest presentation is of itchy erythematous
scaly patches, especially in the flexures such as in
front of the elbows and ankles, behind the knees
and around the neck.
other features = Scratching can produce excoriations, and repeated rubbing produces skin thickening (lichenification) with exaggerated skin markings
complication of atopic?
broken skin increases makes you susceptible to infection from pathogen
Test atopic?
diagnosis normally clinical
but can get IgE - how?
radio-immunoabsorbent assay
or indirectly test via skin prick
prognosis of atopic?
at least 50% are excema free by teenage years.
Treatment of atopic?
First line - common sense - avoid trigger, modify RFs such as diet, emollients, bath oil/soap substitute etc.. if persist add in Topical therapies: – steroids – immunomodulators ■ Adjunct therapies: – oral antibiotics – sedating antihistamines – bandaging ■ Phototherapy/systemic therapy (for severe cases)
