Seaweed Flashcards
What are the different types of seaweeds?
Red algae
Green algae
Brown algae
What are the different kinds of flowering plants?
Seagrass
Saltmarsh plants
Mangroves
Describe seaweed structures
Holdfasts (no roots) Stipes Blades Pneumatocusts No seeds or flowers
Describe flowering plant structures
Roots and rhizomes
Stems
Leaves
Cellulose
Where is seaweed distributed?
In the photic zones of coastal areas (0-40m)
Where does seaweed get its nutrients?
From seawater
What are the importance of seaweeds?
Provide food for herbivores and detritivores
Provide habitat for other animals
What are the general seaweed structures?
Flat blades for high surface area to volume ratio
Stipe- strong flexible link between blades and holdfast
Holdfasts - root like structures that keep seaweeds anchored to the bottom
What are true plants?
Flowering plants
What is seagrass?
Submerged in seawater
Grass shoots connected to a root system
Pollen dispersed by currents.
Where is seagrass found?
In sheltered, shallow waters along the coast
Hold soft sediments that would otherwise be washed away by currents or tides.
What is the importance of seagrass?
Provide habitat for algae and animals
Feed herbivores
Dead seagrass material feeds lots of additional animals.
