Evolution and Biology Basics Flashcards
What is descent with modification?
All life on Earth has a common ancestor
What are the 3 domains of life?
Archae
Bacteria
Eucarya
What makes something a living thing?
Have order (organization of complex systems)
Can reproduce
Can grow and develop
Can utilize energy for work
Can respond to the environment
Regulates internal and external environment
Adapts to changing environment over generations
What are the most important elements for life?
Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphate and sulphur
What are organic molecules?
Molecules involved in the processes of life
Contain Carbon, hydrogen, and usually oxygen.
High energy molecules
How can organic molecules be classified?
4 general groups
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Lipids
- Nucleic Acids
Describe carbohydrates and give some examples
Chains and or rings of C, H, O
Glucose (energy)
Starches energy for plants
Glycogen energy for animals
Describe proteins and give some examples
Most varied and complex organic molecules
Made up of amino acid and sub units
Enzymes (catalyst for biological reactions), hormones,
Describe lipids and give some examples
Repels water
Structural
Used for energy storage
Has buoyancy
Describe nucleic acids and give some examples
Chains of repeating subunits-nucleotides DNA or RNA DNA is blueprint for all of life Responsible for the code necessary for production of proteins Only 4 nucleotides total for all of life
What is the equation of photosynthesis?
CO2 + H20 + solar energy = glucose + oxygen
All about food and air
What is respiration?
The breaking apart of organic molecules in order to release and use energy
The reverse of photosynthesis
Simple sugar + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + chemical energy
What are autotrophic organisms?
Harness energy from sun to make glucose then use it in respiration to release energy to make more complicated organic molecules to grow and divide.
What are heterotrophic organisms?
Harness energy from consuming the organic matter in autotrophs or other heterotrophs then use it in respiration to release energy to make more complicated organic molecules to grow and divide.
