Define Search
An entry or intrusion by a government agent on a quest for evidence into an area where an individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy
Define Frisk Search
A crushing and passing over the outer clothing of a person in a search for a weapon
Purpose of a Frisk Search
When a reasonable suspicion exists that an individual may have a weapon concealed that could endanger the boarding team
Scope of Frisk Search
Remove objects apparent as a weapon, may extend to immediate area of the person (grab area)
Define Search Incident to Arrest
A detailed crush and feel search of an arrested individual’s person and thorough search of outer clothing

A search following an arrest of an individual, searching for weapons, evidence and means of escape

Define Strip Search
One that involves the intrusive removal of clothing and may be as extensive as a visual exam of nude body
*must have reasonable suspicion that weapon evidence of means to escape is secreted on a person
Define Body Cavity Search
A visual or physical exam into a body cavity
*CG can not conduct, EMS may conduct
Frisk and SIA policy/procedure
- Talk the subject into a position of disadvantage, handcuff subject
- Ask the subject if they have anything that will ‘’Poke, stick or stab me’’
- Separate the body into quadrants
- When checking groin area, search up until you meet resistance
- Female bra-line frisk/SIA is limited only to the bra-line. Knife-hand, using back of the hand to check the area
- When conducting a frisk/SIA on the opposite gender, always try to have an officer of the same gender frisk/SIA the subject. (Male/Male and Female/Female)
- If you have to search a subject of the opposite gender, use two-person integrity
What are your responsibilities for a handcuffed subject
Life jacket, stand a post to supervise the subject, sit them on the deck
