What is indexing?
Indexing is the process that creates a search index i.e. a database of all words on all pages of the web
What is a crawler?
Is the search engine’s program to explore the web pages systematically
Following links to new pages that are indexed (unlinked will not be indexed)
What are the four factors that influence page ranking?
– Link Popularity
– Refresh rate
– Page organization
– Free of spam
How does ranking work?
- The search results are ranked by relevance
- Different algorithms control ranking
- A page is ranked higher if the searched words are found together than if they are separated
What is Link Popularity?
Web pages that other pages link to are perceived as more important by the search engines than those with few or no links to them
What is trusted feed?
Some search engines allow pages to submit changes directly to the search engine (Yahoo) instead of waiting for the spider

Other ways to get noticed by crawler:
– Payment to be visited by the search engine
– Free service (sitemaps.org) that provides crawler information (Google)

– Be sure to get the desired pages indexed

What is an important difference between traditional commerce and e-commerce?
E-commerce is characterized by it’s ubiquity (the fact that it’s available almost everywhere and at all times) and the creation of a market space (a marketplace extended beyond traditional boundaries.
