Q

5 ways to determine wind direction and speed

A

1) classy bands - indicates windward side
2) waves - run perpendicular to wind
3) wind streaks - run parallel to wind
4) smoke, flags, external indicators
5) weather into the wind (on the water)

Speed:

  • wind streaks form @ 8-14 knts
  • white caps form @ 15 knts

Q

Four phases of a Spin

A

1) Spin entry
2) Incipient phase - initial rotation
3) Fully developed phase- full rotation; airspeed, vertical speed, rate of rotation are stabilized in a near vertical flight path
4) Recovery phase - rotation ceases and AOA of wings decrease below critical AOA
- Power to Idle
- Ailerons Neutral
- Full opposite rudder against rotation
- Positive, brisk, straight forward elevator (forward of neutral); drives aircraft toward unstalled state
- neutralize rudder after rotation stops
- Elevator back pressure to return to level flight

Q

What is a spin?

A

An aggravated stall which typically occurs from a full stall with an aircraft in a yawed state

  • the outboard wing is less stalled than the inboard wing
  • airplanes wings exceed their critical angle of attack with a side-slip or yaw acting on the plane
