Carjacking
The act of violently stealing an occupied car
Homicide
The killing of a human being due to the act or omission of another human being.
non-criminal homicide
A homicide itself is not necessarily a crime, particulary when there is a lack of criminal intent.
Non-criminal homicides include killing in self-defence, a misadventure, an automobile wreck (without a violation of a law) or legal execution (by a government)
Murder
The killing of a human being with intent/ intentionally
First degree murder
The premeditated killing of someone / killing someone with malice aforethought (=préméditation)
The penalty for first degree murder can be death because premeditation is considered as an aggravating circumstance.
Second degree murder
The unlawful killing of a person without premeditation (and not committed at the same time as an other crime (rape, robbery)

Manslaughter
Manslaughter is distinguished from murder by lack of any prior intention to kill or create a deadly situation : mitigating circumstance.

Homicide involontaire par imprudence
Occurs when a death is caused by reckless or negligent behaviour

Supreme Court
The Supreme Court is the highest federal court in the US. The Supreme Court is made up of 9 Justices : a Chief Justice and 8 Associate Justices. All Justices are nominated by the US President and must be approved by the US Senate.
