Seamanship Flashcards
what is seamanship?
It is the practice, knowledge and competence of Operating a large ship, boats or any other water craft
What is Bollard?
It is a heavy and stable objects found in docs used as tying points for mooring lines and secure them keeping the vessel stationary
What is Bitts
Similar to bollard, with the same function of being tie points to secure mooring lines. But has 2 or more heads for the line to wrap around in figure 8 patterns

4 Pillars of IMO
1 SOLAS
2 STCW
3 MARPOL
4 MLC
What is SOLAS?
International convention for the safety of life at sea.
Provides seafarers with minimum safety standards for the construction, equipment and operation of Merchant ships
What is STCW?
international convention for standard, training for certification and watch keeping. sets minimum qualification standards for Masters, officers and watch personnelon sea going merchant ships
What is MARPOL?
International Convention for the prevention of pollution from ships. Provides seafarers with knowledge on how to protect the marine environment as well as also the environment in general by knowing how to dispose of trash and where to dispose them
What is MLC?
Maritime Labor Convention. It is sometimes called the seafarers bill of right. It provides and protects seafarers rights. may it be about pay, living conditions and medical care
6 annexes of Marpol
1 prevention of pollution from oil (2 oct 1983)
2 Control of pollution from noxious substances carried in bulk (2 oct 1983, 6 april 1987)
3 Prevention of pollution from harmful substances on sea carried in packaged form (July 1 19921)
4 Prevention of pollution by sewage from ships (27 September 2003)
5 Prevention of pollution by garbafe fromships (31 Dec 1988)
6 Prevention of air pollution (19 may 2005)
Solution for metacentrec height
GM= KM-KG
what is a waterline?
Waterline is where the hull of the ship meets the surface of the water. The line fluctuates depending on how much cargo the ship is carrying.
What is a ship’s draft
Si the distance from the surface of the water to the bottom part of the ship or keel
What is under keel clearance?
The distance between the bottom part of the hull (keel) and the seabed
Three drafts of a ship
aft draft, for draft, main draft
what is an epirb
Electronic position indicating radio beacon. Sends out a distress signals including our location for search and rescue authorities and nearby vessels by the use of SARSAT or search and rescue satellite aid and tracking
how to use EPIRB?
1 Remove safety clip from bracket
2 remove cover
3 take out EPIRB from bracket
4 Pull locking pin
5 move main switch to ON and if top of antenna is lighting up, its is now in operation
Types of fire extinguishers
CO2 = B, C x A,D
FOAM = A,B x C
DRY POWDER = A,B,C
WATER = A
WET CHEM = K, A
What is GMDSS?
Global Maritime distress and security system- used for: emergency and distress messages. vessel-to-vessel routine communications. vessel-to-shore routine communications.
What is ISPS?
International ship and port facilities security code- was adopted after the attack of 9/11. is a set of measures meant to enhance the security of ship and port facilities.
How many levels of security according to ISPS
3 Levels
Level 1 (Normal Threat)
is the level at which the minimum protective and security measures are in permanent effect.
level 2 (Tightened threat)
result of a heightened threat of a security incident. additional security measures are applied.
Level 3 (exceptional threat)
When a security threat is probable or imminent. Specific protective security measures are maintained
PPE include?
Helmet
eye protection
hearing protection
respirators
gloves
chem suits
safety shoes
What is a bridge?
Is the command center of the ship where the captain, officers and watch personnel are found
What is a gangway?
A narrow platform that provides passage and for personnel
What is anchor?
A heavy object that is used to hook on the seabed in order to prevent the vessel from drifting away
Where is the muster station located?
It is located on the main deck
what are the alarms on ships?
General alarm
FIRE ALARM
man overboard
abandon ship
CO2 alarm
Bridge alarm
International waters?
are seas that are not in any countries’ Terretory
What is territorial water?
an area of water where a sovereign state has jurisdiction,
how many types of mooring lines?
There are 6 mooring lines in my knowledge
what are those 6 mooring lines?
forward: healine, fore breast lines, fore spring lines
Aft: stern lines, aft breast line, aft spring lines
What is meteorology
Study of atmosphere and its phenomenon including the weather and the climate
Anchor swing circle
radius of the ships swing around the anchor
What is IMO?
is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating maritime transport.
6 motion of a ship
pitch, roll, yaw, heave, sway, surge
pitch is up and down motion of the stern and bow
roll tilting from side to side
yaw side to side movement
heave is up and down motion of a shipn (ascending and descending motion, like an elevaotr)
sway sideways siding motion (caused by wind and current)
surge forward and back motion
PRYHSS
What is IMDG code
International Maritime dangerous goods
9 classes of dangerous goods
explosives- fireworks
gases- methane, propane
flammable liquid- gasoline
flammable solid- sulfur, phosphorous
oxidizing substances-
toxic and infectious substances
radio active material
corrosive bleach
miscellaneous
EGFFOTRCM
abandon ship drill is done in every?
For cargo, every month
For Passengers, every week
when is it okay to throw food wast?
If ground about 3 nautical miles offshore
If not ground, about 12 nautical miles offshore
what is ISM CODE
International safety management code -
sets safety management objectives and requirements for safety management systems
What is SARSAT and its function?
Search and rescue satellite aid and tracking. It is used to detect and locate emergency beacons.
What is safety?
Safety for me, is defined as a state in which you are away from danger and being protected from harm. Preventing both physical and mental harm
What is SART and it’s function?
Stands for search and rescue transponder. It is used in order for radar to locate survival Craft or distressed vessels by reacting to radar emissions. It is viewed as a series of dots that creates a line on a n X band Radar with a range of 8 nautical miles
What is buoyancy?
It is the external force caused by water that pushes the ship upwards causing the ship to float.
What is center of buoyancy
Is the point in which the upward force of displaced water volume is seemingly concetrated
What is center of gravity?
center of gravity is where the weight of an object seemingly acts. its as of the objects weight is concentraited into a single point
What is metacenter?
metacenter is the theoretical point in which the tilted center of buoyancy intersects with the center of gravity
