sea level change Flashcards
what is eustatic sea level change
a global change in sea level resulating from an actual rise or fall in the level of the sea itself
what is isostatic sea level chnage
local changes in sea level resulting from the land rising or falling relative to the sea
how are submergent features formed
climate gets warmer ice on the land melts and replenishes the main sore of water (sea) and as a result sea level rises worldwide (eustatic). in many areas this floods the lower parts of the land to produce submergent features such as fjords, rias and the dalmatian coast.
what are rias and how are they formed
created by rising sea levels drowning river valleys. examples Fowey estuary Cornwall and Kingsbridge estuary South Devon.
what are fjord and how are they formed
drowned glacial valleys created by rising sea levels. examples Milford sound fjord New Zealand
how are dalmatian coasts formed
where the topography of the land runs parallel to the coastline and becomes flooded by sea level rise. islands and peninsulas are allinged parallel to but just off shore from the main land. example located on the east shore of the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. Dalmatia is a narrow belt stretching from the island of Rab in the north to the Bay of Kotor in the south.
how are emergent features formed.
weight of the ice causes land surfaces to sink and when ice is removed the land rises again (isostatic) creating raised beaches.
what are raised beaches and how are they formed
raised beaches are areas of former wae cut platforms and their beaches which are at a higher level than the sea level present. example isle of Arran well developed raised beach north of Drumadoon 4-5m above sea level
