What happens during the first trimester of pregnancy?
- the foetus develops fingers, toes, ears, ankles, wrists and eyelids
- heart starts to beat around 25th day after conception
- development of all major organs + placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic sac and limb buds
How does conception occur?
The sperm enters the vagina, it then travels up the vaginal canal, the sperm meets the egg in the outer portion of the fallopian tube (fertilisation), fertilised egg travels down the uterus, egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus, egg uses lining for nourishment, start developing to be a baby for 9 months

What happens during the second trimester?
- blood vessels develop
- organs and structures form
- hair grows
- foetus reaches 400 grams to 700 grams
- foetus can suck thumb, hiccup and swallow
What happens during the third trimester?
- surfactant forms to prepare lungs for breathing
- fat deposits are formed in preparation for birth
- digestive tract and lungs mature
- brain grows rapidly
- mother’s antibodies are transferred
