Name the superficial extrinsic back muscles.
Rhomboid major Rhomboid minor Levator scapula Trapezius Latissimus dorsi
Name the intermediate extrinsic back muscles.
Serratus posterior superior
Serratus posterior inferior
Describe the innervation of the extrinsic back muscles.
Dorsal rami of spinal nerve and the accessory nerve (trapezius).
Name the superficial deep back muscles.
Splenius capitus
Splenius cervicis
Describe the attachments of splenius capitus.
Origin: Lower half of ligamentum nuchae, spinous processes of CVII to TIV
Insertion: Mastoid process, skull below lateral one third of superior nuchal line
What is the function of splenius capitus
Together—draw head backward, extending neck; individually—draw and rotate head to one side (turn face to same side).
Describe the innervation of splenius capitus.
Posterior rami of middle cervical nerves.
Describe the attachments of splenius cervicis.
Origin: Spinous processes of TIII to TVI
Insertion: Transverse processes of CI to CIII
Describe the function of splenius cervicis.
Together—extend neck; individually—draw and rotate head to one side (turn face to same side).
Describe the innervation of splenius cervicis.
Posterior rami of lower cervical nerves.
Name the intermediate group of deep back muscles.
