How many lumbar vertebrae are there?

How many sacral vertebrae are there?

How many coccygeal vertebrae are there?
3-4
Why are cervical vertebrae thinner than those further down?
Because they only have to support the head.
Where would would you find the transverse foramina of the cervical vertabrae?
In the transverse processes.
What is unusual about the spinous processes of the cervical vertebrae?
It is bifid - to allow for extra muscle attachments.
Why are cervical vertebrae more prone to dislocation than other vertebrae?
Flat articular facets.
What are the features of the atlas (C1)?
- No spinous process or body.
- Consists of anterior and posterior arches (each has tubercle and lateral mass)
- Tubercle each on the medial surface of the lateral mass for the transverse ligament, which holds in place the dens of the axis.
What are the features of the axis (C2)?
Has 2 large flat surfaces, the superior articular facets, upon which the atlas rotates.
It’s distinguishing feature is the dens (G tooth)
(card unfinished)
What is the function of the dens?
Acts as a pivot that allows the atlas and attached head to rotate from side to side.
Why is the dens prone to fracture?
Less dense bone.
What might be the result of a fracture?
The transverse ligament of the ?altlas holds it in place.
card unfinished
Where is the zygapophysial joint?
Between superior and inferior articular facets of vertebrae.
